About Us
GERMINATION
After studying applied biology, Robert worked for the Ministry of agriculture, fisheries and food; studying the effects of pesticides and farming on wildlife and the environment. During these years he met many growers and, learning from their collective experience, became committed to the principles of organic growing. At the same time Yvonne worked for MAFF at the Central Veterinary Laboratory, where the two first met.
POTTING ON
Robert spent time developing his hobbies of making folk musical instruments and growing plants and vegetables whilst still working for MAFF.
He was offered a teaching post at South Hill Park Arts Centre at Bracknell and in 1978 became “Instrument maker in residence”. In 1980 Yvonne joined the business which six months later moved to a 1.5 acre site in Oxfordshire, where Robert Longstaff Workshops has remained to this day.
GROWING ON
The business expanded, moving simple wood working into new territory using a unique laser cutting system originated by Robert and Yvonne. The innovative, award winning techniques put Robert Longstaff Workshops on the map as an authority in UK product innovation.
The site was also developed, including a number of no-dig, organic, deep vegetable beds, fruit garden, pond and formal areas. Robert and Yvonne also began to design show gardens for major horticultural exhibitions including Chelsea and Hampton Court, winning a host of awards including gold.
CROSS POLLINATION
In 2000 the gardening side of the business had grown sufficiently to be considered an enterprise in its own right and Oxford Garden Products was formed.
Both Robert and Yvonne enjoyed passing on their skills to schools and other groups that visited The Site and began hosting talks, lectures and demonstrations around the country.
FRUITION
By 2007 strong links had been formed with organisations such as Garden Organic (formerly HDRA), the Heritage Seed Library, The Centre for Alternative Technology, The WI and others. The educational and experimental gardening taking place at The Site received huge support with all who visited, and the setting up of The Oxford Garden Project was proposed.
Now, in 2009, the project has been successfully launched, working in partnership with the above organisations as well as Oxford Adult Education Services, PCT, WRAP (both Robert and Yvonne are “Master Composters” for Oxfordshire) and others. A full program of talks, demonstrations and courses (including City and Guilds) are run on subjects ranging from Organic gardening and composting to seasonal cooking and preserving.
